Naming Nash

Spot... Moose... Bailey… How do you choose what name to give your pooch? Before I met my wife, I liked the name Remi, short for Remington. I thought it would be a great name for a black lab. Plus it had the appeal of sounding very hunting like. Then I realized that I wasn't that brilliant/creative with the name. Winny (Winchester) was also over used.

My uncle has a knack of naming dogs off of electronic parts: Diode, Yagi (it's a type of radio antennae). He does this because he is passionate about electronics. I liked this idea. So what am I passionate about? Fly-fishing, outdoors, business… OK, that's a start.

Fly-fishing dog names:

  • Sage
  • Red(ington)
  • Copper (John)
  • Damsel (fly)
  • Lefty (Kreh)
  • Adams
  • And various other fly names

I don't own a sage rod, and my dog is golden color. And I don't think my wife would approve of any of those names anyway.

Outdoor dog names:

  • Sky
  • Moose
  • Bear
  • Pike('s Peak)

I started running out of names. I already had a dog named Bear, and Moose is more for a chocolate lab… Sky might work, but I don't know about Pike. Sounds too much like a fish.

Business dog names:

  • Porter('s Five Forces)
  • (John) Nash
  • (Six) Sigma
  • Bailout (ok, maybe not)

Porter is a good name. But it's a little difficult to roll off the tongue. Sigma? Sounds too Greek student/science nerd. Nash… Nash seems to work. Plus, Nash sort of sounds like his former name: "Chance".

Haven't heard of John Nash? Ever watch the movie "A Beautiful Mind" with Russell Crowe? John Nash is a Nobel Peace Prize recipient. His dissertation at Princeton was on non-cooperative games, which is more commonly known as the Nash Equilibrium. In essence, the Nash Equilibrium states that when I work in partnership for what's best for me and for the group then we all achieve versus when we compete with each other. The movie has a great scene where supposedly Nash comes to this original idea.

In the movie, Nash is at a bar with some of his friends. In walks a smoking hot blonde with some of her friends. Nash's friends are all drooling over the blonde and are already starting to work their way towards her. Nash stops them. He says that the only way for everyone to score is to listen to him. If they all approach the blonde, she will dismiss each one of them so that she can feel in control and superior. Then the guys will then turn to the friends since they were shot down by the blonde. Well, not wanting to play second fiddle to the blonde, her friends will turn down the guys. They lose, however, Nash points out if they ignore the blonde and go after the friends the girls will be honored. More pointedly he says that they will all get laid tonight.
